Living Room vs Family Room

Remember some time ago when I posted about our new house purchase?  We are still about 3 weeks away from our closing date, but so far everything looks good as far as all the paperwork goes.  I have started planning the look and feel of our new home, and it is a tough job!  I used to dream of the day when I would have more than a 1-bedroom apartment to decorate...and now that I do, I don't know where to start!

One thing that has really been puzzling me is the concept of having both a living room and a family room.  I have never lived in a home with this type of set-up and I tend to use these terms interchangeably.  I'm sure you can understand why I have no idea what to use these spaces for.  So, can you please help a girl out??

Here is our living room:

This photo was taken from the dining room.  When you walk in the front door, the living room is to your immediate left and the dining room is on the right.

Here is our family room:

The angle of this photo would be if you stepped into the family room from the kitchen.  To the right of the lamp is a large window and to the left of the fireplace is a door that leads to the deck.

I have read numerous articles on the different uses of a living room and family room.  From what I gather, the living room is more formal with no TV (gasp!) and the family room has the comfy furniture with the entertainment.

Do you have a living room and a family room?  How do you utilize these spaces?  Do you have any great ideas for these blank slates?  I appreciate all input!

  1. Yeah, I don't know what I'd do with a living room, because I prefer to have less rooms if possible. I feel like if I had a living room and a family room, I would just end up buying more furniture to fill that room up so it wouldn't look empty. Otherwise, I would use it as a place to store large objects or junk and that wouldn't look good at all. ;)

Your house looks really nice and roomy and I also like the exterior of your house (pic you posted in another post). Very cute!
