Get Organized in August

Happy August!  I can't believe we are already half way through the year!

In case you need a reminder, here are the tasks I am currently working on:

April 22 - Swap out winter decor for spring decor. (I'm considering this one complete - see my post about my front porch decor.)
 
May 8 - Shoe Parking! Many families take shoes off at the door to avoid tracking outside dirt into the house and onto carpets. A bench with a handy shoe rack makes it easy for family and guests to stop and remove shoes before going further into the house. (Still working on this one, I purchased a small bench, but not sure if I have the right spot for it.  I'm thinking of doing something in the coat closet for shoes.)

May 17 - Open that mail right over the recycle bin. Handling mail sometimes leads to stacks here and stacks there. So when you bring it into the house, sort it immediately. Shred anything that has personal information on it and recycle the rest. Keep any bills or important mail in a separate file. (Also working on this one.  I am looking for a good mail tray - let me know if you have any suggestions!)

May 24 - Organizing the car is something we let slide while we take care of our house and families. Containerize loose items so things don't fall out when you open the door.

June 17 - Create a kitchen annex. Store seldom used appliances and serving pieces together in a closet. If you don't use it regularly, it shouldn't be taking up valuable real estate in the kitchen. (Working on this one - waiting on some shelving units for the basement.)

June 19 - Manage your money. Some simple things to keep on top of your finances are balancing your checkbook, paying a couple of bills each evening, reconciling your credit card statement, reviewing that bank statement for errors and filing your weekly receipts. These simple tasks give you a good view of your finances. (Done!  I created a finance binder and Patrick & I just went over our July expenses.  He liked to point out all the trips I made to Target....ooops!  We also hashed out a budget for the month of August based on what we spent in July.  I would totally recommend reviewing your finances at least monthly.  It was a real eye opener to see everything written down on paper.)

June 26 - Clean out your old makeup in your cosmetic drawer. There are items that should be replaced frequently, such as mascara. It should be replaced every 3 months for safety sake.

July 8 - Straighten up your garage as much as possible. Then sweep it.
July 16 - Time to restock your summer first aid kit. Essential and basic items are: sunscreen, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, bandages, aloe vera, hydrocortisone ointment, and cold compresses.  (Done!  We just went through our summer supplies and made new purchases - suncreen, aloe, bug spray, itchy cream - all together in one basket.)

July 17 - Thoroughly clean the kitchen sink. Clean in and around the drains. Use a brush to scrub around the faucet and sprayer.


Here's what's on the agenda for August:



Aug 2 - Walk around your yard and check for fading flowers. Cut out (dead head) these flowers to keep the plants producing more flowers instead of going to seed.

Aug 11 - Wash down outside patio, driveway or decks after sweeping.

Aug 18 - After clearing off the top of your refrigerator, dust and clean the top. Consider finding other locations for items or discard everything!

Aug 22 - Go through your pen and pencil junk drawers.  Empty drawer and wash out and clean. Then test all pens and pencils to see if they work. Throw away anything that does not work, is not used or not wanted.

  1. You are making me feel very unorganized. hahaha! Great for you. I'm scared to look on top of my refrigerator and in my pencil/junk drawer.

  2. You amaze me with your energy! I know I used to have that much. I've been so busy just keeping up with the house that packing seems to be going at about 1 box a week. I know that's an exageration, but it feels that slow. Thanks for linking up with Making Space Mondays! I hope we see you back again soon. -Tabitha
